The Foundation's work: the living documented archive of Ilze Arne
Ilze Arne is a Latvian composer whose creative and professional work spans several decades and continues today. What she has already created forms a substantial part of Latvian musical and cultural heritage.
The Foundation's central work is the systematic identification, gathering and documentation of Ilze Arne's creative and professional activity within one unified, structured archive. The Foundation identifies and gathers information, documents and catalogues it, classifies and researches it, verifies sources, connects individual pieces of evidence to one another, digitises where possible, preserves, and makes the result publicly accessible.
In one place the archive connects information about her biography and chronology; her compositions — choral works, piano and instrumental music; her teaching; Song Festivals, concerts and performances; international activity; recordings and editions; people and collaborations — poets, conductors, performers, students; ensembles, institutions and places; and documents, photographs, concert programmes and audio or video evidence.
The archive rests on documented sources. Every statement is tied to its origin, while incomplete or mutually differing historical data is not smoothed over — differences and open research questions are preserved for further study.
Building one unified archive does not mean the Foundation holds every original document, photograph or recording. Much of the evidence remains with institutions, publications, archives and private collections; the Foundation identifies, describes and interconnects it while naming its origin.
Step by step this becomes a single, continuously extended archive of Ilze Arne's creative and professional work — preserving what has been created while continuing to document what she does today. The Foundation's structure allows further creators, collections and cultural initiatives to be taken in over time, but today the central archival subject is Ilze Arne.
